4WD brake servicing is crucial for safety, especially under heavy loads or off-road conditions. In order to keep your vehicle safe, GMR Automotive offers professional brake system inspections which cover brake pad, disc rotor and brake fluid checks and includes a Safe-T-Stop brake report to prevent issues and ensure safe stopping power.
When to Service Your 4WD Brakes
- Squeaking or grinding noises
- Increased stopping distance or vibrations
- Brake pedal feels spongy
- Vehicle pulls to one side when braking
- The dashboard ABS or brake warning light is on
- Unusual burning smell (like overheating brakes).
It is recommended that you have your brakes inspected if you experience any of the above symptoms, or at least every 10,000km or 12 months. Keep in mind that this may need to be done more frequently if driving off road, in sand, mud, or towing.

Why are my 4WD brakes squeaking?
Brake squealing is one of the most common signs your 4WD needs a brake inspection. Worn brake pads, dust and mud buildup, glazed rotors, or moisture after off-road driving can all cause squeaking noises. If the noise gets worse when braking, it’s best to have your brakes checked before damage spreads to the rotors.
Why does my steering wheel shake when I brake?
If your steering wheel vibrates or shakes under braking, your brake rotors may be warped from heat or heavy towing loads. This is especially common in 4WDs used for towing caravans, boats, or driving in mountainous terrain. Brake servicing can identify whether your rotors need machining or replacement.
Why do my brakes feel soft or spongy?
A soft brake pedal usually means there’s air or moisture in the brake lines, or your brake fluid has deteriorated over time. Brake fluid absorbs moisture naturally, which reduces braking performance and can lead to brake failure if ignored.
Why is my brake pedal hard to press?
A hard brake pedal can indicate problems with the brake booster, vacuum system, or seized brake components. This can make your 4WD harder to stop safely and should be inspected immediately.
Why does my 4WD pull to one side when braking?
If your vehicle drifts left or right while braking, it may have uneven brake pad wear, a sticking caliper, or contaminated brake components. Off-road mud, water crossings, and dirt can accelerate uneven wear in 4WD braking systems.
